Great Kid Movies to Watch With the Family From the Twin Bunk Beds Pt. 2

Here are some classic movies to watch with the family, curled up in the twin bunk beds with the lights low and the bowls of popcorn being passed around. Check out these great movies for a guaranteed fun family night.

An American Tail

This classic 1986 animated film by Steven Spieldberg’s production team was the first animated film produced by Universal Pictures and is considered a classic children’s animated film because of its powerful storyline about the immigrant American experience and the importance of family and one’s own history. In Russia, a group of cruel cats that are representatives of German Nazis destroy the village of the Mousekewitzes, a Russian-Jewish family of mice. The Mousekewitzes are forced to immigrate to America where they are told there are no cats. The film follows the family’s travails to reach America and freedom. The film was so successful a sequel was released entitled “An American Tail: Fievel Goes West” which takes place seven years after the Mousekewitzes reached New York.

The Land Before Time

This 1988 animated film about an orphan Apatosaurus dinosaur named Littlefoot who is trying to learn how to live on his own was a popular film in my household as a kid. I loved dinosaurs so I knew this film by heart. Littlefoot meets a group of other dinosaurs from Cera the Triceratops to Ducky the Parasaurolophus to Petrie the Pteranodon and finally Spike, the Stegosaurus. The film was applauded for dealing with the issue of prejudice between dinosaurs species and spawned a hugely successful “Land Before Time” franchise with toys, many, many direct to video sequels as well as video games and a television series. Kids will love this fun, sometimes scary, film about dinosaurs and the journey of growing up.

Thumbelina

Another hit film by animated film director Don Bluth, “Thumbelina” is based on the popular Hans Christian Andersen story about lonely woman who wants a child of her own and is given a little girl no bigger than a thumb. The woman loves her thumb-sized daughter but is worried that there is no one her size. Thumbelina dreams of going to a world of fairies who are her size so she can find someone to fall in love with. Thumbelina is taken to a magical world where she meets a prince named Cornelius. The film features the voice work of the always annoying Gilbert Gottfried as Berkeley the Beetle. You may find his voice annoying but your kids will probably find it hilarious. Little girls who love fairies and fantasy tales will watch this movie again and again.
