The Great Depression was an era that has created a challenge for women who wanted to quilt. Not only money is very tight in households, but had limited reserves of the country. The women had to use creativity and ingenuity to create beautiful quilts. Some popular quilts of today were born of the Great Depression.

The Great Depression, for those of us who were not there at the time, was an economic slump in North America, Europe and other regions industrialized world that began in 1929 and lasted until 1939. Started with the fall in agricultural prices in the 1920s, is known for the collapse of Wall Street in 1929. This depression was the longest and most severe ever experienced by the industrialized Western world.

Bankers and others have previously time lost all shot to death in buildings. Workers who always struggled to find jobs to feed their families. With the collapse of the economy, have found creative ways to the door with small amounts of cash, while companies had to be creative to survive in the operation of some of those costs earn money from their customers.

It is easy to see why companies selling quilted fabric, the son and the tools must find a way to create value for its Quilters promote products and continue to spend such hard-earned money. Fortunately for them, quilts were a necessity to be set manually because the time of serious difficulties limited economic purchasing power.

Women's magazines began offering free quilting patterns similar to each issue to increase its readership. After all, most household budgets could not afford to buy a magazine, not to mention several ways padding.

So to continue selling magazines and promote the purchase of fabrics, many suppliers have chosen to offer models that encourage free shopping. Models such as the Star of Bethlehem, the wedding ring, flower garden grandmother and even Dresden Plate are some of the models we use today were actually the result of the Great Depression.

Often, women share a magazine. That is traced quilting patterns or even a picture of a quilt photographed for the magazine to their own models to the house. The most popular magazines occasionally offer iron on quilt patterns. They were well received because many women can not share not only the cost of the magazine but could share iron in the habits of their padding.

Therefore, offering free quilting patterns actually become a common marketing tradition that is still used today.

I found particularly interesting to note that what has been used to market to women and sell women's magazines of the Great Depression is still used today. Many companies offer even free patterns in their magazines for quilting and other crafts.
