How can I look at old black and white negatives so I can order prints?

I found a pile of very old film negatives and want to preview them before I order them. they vary in size from 2" X 2" and larger black and white?

The traditional way to preview would to put them on a light table - basically glass with a fluorescent lamp (or any light source) behind it. If you don't have a light table, hold it up to or against a window that's in the sun, but make sure the windows clean so you don't get your negs dirty. The problem with this is that unless you have a lot of experience it can be difficult to imagine what the photo will look like from the negative (bright parts in the photo appear dark in the negative and vice versa).

To fix that problem, normally you would go to a lab and ask for a "contact sheet" to be printed. This is a page with a whole bunch of smaller thumbprint photos that you can preview. Depending on how many you need to preview this may become expensive.

The easiest and cheapest way I know (using modern technology) would be to find a scanner that has a transparency or film adapter. You don't need a fancy scanner, since you just want to preview, so any flatbed that can scan film will do. It also sounds like you have some larger medium format negs so specialized 35mm film scanners won't help anyways. Scan the negatives into the computer with the black and white setting, then once in the computer most scanner or photo editing software has an "invert" button that will let you change the negative into a "positive" so it looks like a regular b&w photo for you to preview.

Ask around to see if someone you know has a scanner that will handle transparencies, if not you can find some cheap scanners (<$100) that will. The quality probably won't be good enough to print from, but that's fine as long as you just want to preview on the computer. Depending on how many you have to do, it might be worthwhile to buy a cheap scanner, otherwise if it's just a few I'd probably get contact sheets done.
